5 Tips on How to Maintain Your Septic TankProperly cared for, your septic tank typically has a lifespan of 30 to 50 years. To keep your home’s septic system efficiently running for as long as possible, you’ll want to follow some of these tips to lengthen the lifespan and ensure optimal function of one of your home’s most vital systems:

  1. Regularly inspect and pump: A septic tank should be inspected every three to five years, or more frequently if you notice issues in its functioning. Your septic tank should also be pumped every three to five years to keep clogs from accumulating. Your septic company can advise you on the right frequency for inspection and pumping based on factors like the size of your tank and the number of people in your household.
  2. Pump when needed: Proper use can help avoid the need to pump too often. Avoid putting things down your drain such as grease or oil and try to spread out water usage by doing laundry throughout the week rather than all in one day. You should also make sure to only use septic-safe cleaners and toilet paper. Even with proper usage, periodic pumping is definitely a must to keep your system working properly.
  3. Be conscious of output: An excess of water flowing into the septic system can cause its various components to be overworked and can lead to your motor failing, basin overflowing, or other complications. Differently sized septic tanks can process different amounts of water at a time, so it’s important to know your home’s septic tank capacity and not go over that limit in your daily water use. Chemicals, organic materials, or oil-based liquids also have the potential to clog and disrupt your system, so you must be careful about what goes down your drains.
  4. Landscape appropriately: Your yard’s landscaping features can help or hurt your septic tank and drain field. Deep-rooted trees or bushes can damage or break your septic system’s pipes. When deciding how to landscape on and around your septic system, it’s best to plant grass — which has a root system shallow enough to not impact septic systems and absorbency abilities that will help your septic system take on fluctuating water levels.
