If you live in a rural area, you most likely have a septic tank instead of a municipal sewer connection. The good news is that taking care of it is not difficult, thanks to the efficiency of modern systems. However, be sure to follow a few basic guidelines, such as the following septic system tips for trouble-free, clean operation.

Worker emptying septic

Divert rainwater from the drain field. A soggy drain field will struggle to absorb and neutralize waste, so plan roof gutters, foundation drains and landscaping to allow excess water to flow away from the drain field.

Don’t overload the drain field or the tank (one of the most crucial septic system tips).

  • Check toilets and faucets for leaks and have them fixed right away.
  • Use low-flow nozzles on showers and aerators on faucets to help reduce water consumption.
  • Only run the dishwasher when it’s full.
  • Do small loads of laundry at one time.

Keep trees away from the drain field. Prevent root damage by planting trees at least 100 feet away from the drain field. Trees with large root systems, like willows, should be planted even further away.

Septic system tips 101! Your toilet is not a garbage disposal. Never flush disposable diapers, cat litter, tampons, sanitary napkins, facial tissues, paper towels, coffee grounds or cigarette filters and butts. They will clog the system in less time than you can imagine.
