EPA Warns about ‘Magic’ Products to Keep Your Septic Drain Clean

Septic Services LakelandPosted bySeptic Services LakelandAugust 20th, 2021

Even with a healthy ecosystem breaking down waste, a good drain field, and a well-functioning septic system, the scum and sludge layers in a septic tank will get thicker over time. This scum and sludge needs to periodically be pumped out to keep the drain clean – typically, every 2 to 3 years.

It’s advisable to have your septic tank system inspected once a year, at the least. An inspection involves measuring the scum and sludge levels, inspecting the drain field, and checking all the mechanisms and pipes in the system to ensure effluent is being percolated properly.

EPA Warns about ‘Magic’ Products to Keep Your Septic Drain CleanThere are drain cleaning products on the market that supposedly extend the period between pumpings. They contain chemicals that speed up the process of breaking down sludge in a tank by chomping magic pellets – like Pac-Man does. These additives are unnecessary; all they do is simply join the microbial party that’s already happening under your lawn.

But worse, the chemicals can actually throw the natural ecosystem that has developed in your septic system out of kilter and compromise the enzymes’ ability to break down waste. The EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) strongly urges septic system owners to play it safe and not use drain cleaning products as a substitute for regular tank inspections and pumping.

If not pumped regularly, your septic tank system could overflow. It could even overflow back into your house where drains and toilets belch out the stuff that’s supposed to be in the tank. Overflow can also cause an unanticipated deluge of raw waste flooding the drain field.
