How to Know It's Time for a Drain Field RepairSeptic system failures are one of the most feared situations for homeowners. Worries about clogs and what might come back up the drains are very common, especially for new homeowners or those unfamiliar with septic systems. The good news is that these systems are made to last for a number of years, meaning the actual septic tank should be relatively safe.

The most frequent malfunctions happen within the drain field, also known as the leach field. This is where the water from the tank will eventually end up, and while the water is filtered to be clean, you may still occasionally need a drain field repair.

Here are some ways to tell if your drain field is in need of some extra care:

  • Soft and mushy ground: It is important to know where your drain field is located, as the ground surrounding the field can be indicative of the need for repairs. If the ground is soft and mushy, unrelated to normal rainfall, then it could be a sign that the drain field isn’t functioning properly.
  • Excess water or fluid: Related to the previous point is if puddles of water are appearing near where the septic tank is buried. While rainfall is to be expected, other fluids could leak as well, indicating the need for drain field repair. If you notice any discolored or slimy discharges, call a professional to take care of it.
  • Strong odor: Septic tanks, when functioning properly, should not let excessively odorous smells leak through. If you notice a sewer-like scent coming from your yard, you may want to see if your drain field or tank needs repairing.

While these issues are uncommon, it is still important to be prepared for if you need a drain field repair. If you know what to look out for, you’ll know when it’s time to call a professional for help, and you’ll possibly save yourself further damage or costs in the future.
