How to Prepare for Your Septic Tank InstallationWhen the time comes to replace your septic tank, there are some measures you’ll want to take to make for a smooth installation process. On average, the entire project will take about five to seven days, although this could vary depending on variables like your location, the size and design of the tank, quality of soil around your home, and groundwater conditions. Your septic tank installation is an opportunity to learn more about one of the most important systems in your home and develop an understanding of how to best maintain it. Before breaking ground, here are some things you’ll want to know to prepare for your septic tank installation:

  • Tell neighbors: Your septic tank installation project requires heavy machinery and a team of installers. The loud noises and equipment blocking portions of the street can be disruptive to neighbors. You may want to inform them of your septic tank installation project and let them know what to expect.
  • Be prepared for water shutoff: Your home’s water and plumbing system must be turned off during the septic tank installation, which will mean you will not be able to do laundry, bathe, cook, or clean during that time. It’s best to be stocked with bottled water and possibly prepare accommodations to ensure the process is comfortable.
  • Clear the area: Be sure to move any obstructions from the exterior area of your home where installers will be working. The installation process involves testing soil, excavating earth, and depositing the septic tank itself. Make sure the work area and a path to this place are easily accessible. Outdoor furniture, yard and gardening equipment, and cars should be moved from the areas of your property that will be impacted by the project.
  • Educate yourself on maintenance: A well-maintained septic system stands up to weather and use without disruption. If your septic system is not properly cared for, clogs and overwork can lead to your septic system failing. Before having your septic tank installed, make sure to read, ask questions, and become informed on how your septic tank works and how to best maintain it to increase the longevity of your system.
