How to Locate Your System for Septic Tank Pumping Services

when performing your septic tank pumping
When you first purchase a home that has a septic system, it is wise to have the previous owner point out where the access for the septic tank is to make it easier when you call for septic tank pumping services. Unfortunately, that doesn’t always happen because it is usually the last thing on a buyer’s mind. The good news is that there are ways you can locate the septic tank even if you do not have a way of contacting the seller.

  • County Records- When a septic system is put in, there are drawings submitted during the permitting process showing the location and layout of the septic system. If this record wasn’t provided to you by the home inspector, you should be able to get a copy at the county records department.
  • Search with Probe- The careful use of a metal probe can help you locate the septic tank. Insert it every couple of feet. You don’t have to do your entire yard. You can reduce the search by starting where the sewer pipe leaves the house and progressing a few feet from there. Depending on your property and the regulations in place at the time, the tank could be anywhere from 5 to 25 feet away from your home.
  • Ask the Neighbors- If other homes in your neighborhood were built at the same time with similar floorplans, the chances are quite good that your septic tank placement will be the same as on other properties nearby.
  • Use Same Company- If you can, use the same septic tank pumping company each time you pump, as they are already familiar with the property and likely know exactly where it is.
