Septic tank cleaning is always a good thing. Despite the nature of the dirty work it has to do, you are right to include this procedure on your list of chores. The good news is that septic tank cleaning can be done in an environmentally-friendly way.

Septic Tank Cleaning: Say No to Harsh Chemicals!

In order to break down all the scum and sludge that builds up inside them, septic tanks need a lot of bacteria. Some companies might try to convince you that harsh chemicals will do a good job, but don’t succumb to these claims. Sure, harsh chemicals might clean your tank temporarily, but they’ll also destroy the bacteria that are so vital for long-term efficiency.

Once a month, flush a packet of dry yeast down the toilet that’s closest to the main line. Yeast helps to stimulate enzymes in the bacteria. Also mix a half gallon of boiling water with a gallon of vinegar and pour it into the closest drain to help dissolve the grease buildup that might have formed in the tank. If protecting the environment is important to you, alcohol mixtures, hydrogen peroxide, salt and baking soda are also good for septic tank cleaning. However, do remember that every 3 to 5 years, you should have your tank professionally cleaned.
