How to Keep Your Septic Tank System in Top Shape

Septic Services LakelandPosted bySeptic Services LakelandAugust 20th, 2021

If you are among the nearly 1 in 4 American households that are served by septic systems, the Environmental Protection Agency has the following ‘septicSmart’ advice for you in order to keep your system in top shape:

  • Run your washing machine and dishwasher only when they are full. Install water-efficient products, as well as faucet aerators, and fix plumbing leaks. If you use too much water at one time, your septic system can become overloaded, especially if it hasn’t been pumped recently.
  • Don’t pour solids, grease and fats down the drain. Otherwise, the system will develop clogs. Also, don’t pour any toxic materials down the drain because they can kill the natural organisms that digest waste.

  • Your septic tank system should be inspected every 2 to 3 years by a licensed technician, and the tank should be pumped when necessary (this is also typically every 2 to 3 years). It can cost thousands of dollars to replace or repair a faulty system, in comparison to a few hundred dollars to have it pumped.
  • Never flush household products down a toilet. Disposable wipes and diapers, dental floss, cigarette butts, feminine hygiene products, cat litter and coffee grounds can clog and damage a septic system.
  • Remind visitors not to drive or park on the drain field because the weight of the vehicle may disrupt underground flow or damage buried pipes, causing flooding and backups.

How to Keep Your Septic Tank System in Top ShapeIn addition to being costly, a malfunctioning system can also kill fish and plants and reduce your property value. It could even pose a legal liability. A well-maintained septic tank system keeps your drinking water pure, while reducing the risk of contaminating fauna and flora.
