If you have a septic system, you’ve probably heard it all when it comes to properly caring for your system. We’ve also heard it all when it comes to myths and facts about septic systems, and we wanted to share a few common misconceptions about these systems and why they aren’t true.
• Myth #1: You don’t need to pump your septic tank. One of the most important things you can do to maintain your septic tank is to have it pumped regularly. Septic pumping clears away solid waste from the bottom of the tank so there’s room for wastewater to flow in and out. If your septic tank gets too full, wastewater won’t be able to come into the tank and could end up backing up into your tubs and drains.
• Myth #2: You can put anything down the drain. Many people think that septic systems are nearly impenetrable, but you need to be careful about what goes down your drains. In fact, don’t let anything go down your drains besides human waste and toilet paper.
• Myth #3: You can build on top of your septic tank . Because your septic tank is located so far underground, it might not seem like a huge deal to build or plant over it. But this can make it difficult to access your septic tank when it’s time for pumping or during a septic repair emergency. Extra weight from the ground above can also damage the tank, as can roots from plants and trees.
